Sant Jordi was a knight who saved the princess and all the people that the dragon terrorised. Legend has it that the dragon's blood made a rose bush bloom every year in April. On 23 April 303, on the orders of Emperor Diocletian, the knight Sant Jordi was killed for refusing to persecute the Christians. In 1456 the knight Sant Jordi became Saint and Patron Saint of Catalonia. As 23 April is also the day of the book, the custom of giving a book as well as a rose was added.
This year, the city's bookshops and florists will be able to sell their books and roses in the streets on 21, 22 and 23 April. On Sant Jordi's Day there will be 10 spaces throughout the city with small open-air fairs. In total there will be 180 stands and 31 book signing points.
This year the fairgrounds will be located in the following parts of the city:
- Passeig de Gràcia (from Ronda de Sant Pere to Aragó, L'Eixample).
- Plaça de la Universitat (Ciutat Vella)
- Agustí Centelles Gardens (L'Eixample)
